I’ve received a letter from ‘Zorginstituut Nederland’ / CAK.

When you’re registered in the Netherlands, it can happen that you’ll receive an automatically generated letter from the CAK / Zorginstituut Nederland (Health institute The Netherlands). In this letter they’ll state that you need to apply for the Dutch Basic Health Insurance at a Dutch Health Insurance company and that if you don’t you’ll receive a fine.

What do I have to do now?

Do the Wlz check at the SVB to find out if you need Dutch Basic health insurance. In most cases you’re not obligated to apply for the Dutch Basic Health Insurance at all. If our test tells you that you’re not obligated to apply for the Dutch Basic Health Insurance, please follow the instructions on the page of the SVB to inform them about this.

Sociale Verzekeringsbank

The SVB will do a final check, by using the form you filled in and send them. They’ll determine whether you need to apply for the Dutch Basic Health Insurance or not. They will give you the result of the test within a few weeks. If you don’t need to apply for the Dutch Basic Health Insurance then you don’t need to do anything. The SVB will contact CAK / Zorginstituut Nederland and tell them you don’t have to apply for the insurance. You’ll receive a confirmation of this from the CAK / Zorginstituut Nederland. (If you don’t received a confirmation within a few weeks, then contact Zorginstituut Nederland just to make sure they received the results from the SVB!)

I have to apply for the Dutch Basic Health Insurance

If the SVB decides that you have to apply for the insurance, then you must make sure that you do this within a few weeks time. You can apply for a Dutch Basic Health Insurance here. When the application is finished you can contact the Dutch Health Insurance company (IAK) to provide you with a certificate as a proof of the insurance.
